I thoroughly enjoyed Professor Schwartz's discussion on the use of service learning to enhance the material presented in class. As a student I know exactly what it is like to sit in classes wondering what I'm ever going to use the material I learn for or sit and listen to a wonderful lecture only to have no frame of reference to apply the knowledge I learn to. Taking Professor Schwartz's class as a Freshmen taught me that what we discuss in class is not only real but also personal. As part of the service I served in a legal clinic which gave advice to those who could not afford lawyers. I may not remeber every fact that Professor Schwartz talked about in class but I still clearly remember the issues that were involved in the politics of of poverty and what real people in real situations felt like. It has had a strong impact on me since. Today we are living in a global world where everything is interconnected. It is no longer sufficient to think of Universities as isolated spheres of learning and thinking. To educate responsible and aware individuals, teachers must find ways to apply learning in the classroom to world outside.
