I think you and Bill both illustrate why flexibility is so important in teaching. Many a time I've interrupted a scheduled lecture to wheel a tv into the classroom and cover an unfolding event. It is THOSE things that make my subject relevant to my students' lives. Do I have to then shift lectures/topics around? Sure, but it's worth it. The key is to teach it - not to teach it in a certain order. In my experience, it's been easier to get students to learn things that they feel apply to them.
