I invite Dr. Cline to examine my syllabi to decide whether they are "bland." We have across the curriculum moved away from surveys for precisely the reasons he suggested. Trying to teach "from Plato to NATO" generally required spending too little time on any one subject to give students anything more than a superficial acquaintance with it.

Thus in the first semester of "Human Nature and the Social Order," students get roughly 3-4 weeks on Locke's _Second Treatise_ and 5-6 weeks on Aristotle's _Politics_ and _Ethics._ These are not superficial treatments.
