| Belanger, Marc. "Teaching the Politics of Identity in Introductory Comparative Politics."
Presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Political Science
Association, Atlanta, GA, September 2, 1999. | paper | This paper examines my effort to use political identity, particularly the construction of national political identities, as a foundation for my Introduction to Comparative Politics course. My approach emphasizes teaching about politics rather than political science. I present political outcomes as reflections of political battles over identity in each of the case studies. Students are far more able, and interested, in comparing outcomes analytically when they better understand the sources of human aspirations and conflict which drive politics in each place. |
