| Crawford, Sue E. S. 1997. "Teaching Public
Policy: A Community Problem Approach." Presented at the annual meeting of the Midwest
Political Science Association, Chicago, IL. | paper | This paper describes a set of assignments for undergraduate public policy courses, analyzes student evaluations of the assignments, and suggests modifications of the assignments. The assignments teach students to apply the knowledge that they acquire in the policy courses to a specific policy problem in a community. Students follow news coverage, attend meetings, and conduct interviews to learn more about the policy problem in their communities. The final paper for the course requires students to combine scholarly research and materials from their communities to analyze the problem in their communities, evaluate possible solutions, and propose a solution. Other assignments include reports of meetings or interviews, a letter to the editor or a memo to a public official, and a clip file on the policy problem. |
