Pederson, William D.  and Norman W. Provizer. 1996. "A Foot in the Door: Equalizing "Washington Semesters" For Undergraduates." Presented at the annual meeting of the American Political Science Association, San Francisco, CA.

| paper |

"Washington Semesters" for undergraduates have always offered significant opportunities for students to overcome geographic inequities that restrict them from experiential education in the nation's capital. Washington Semesters originated at private colleges and universities and outnumber those at public universities four to one, but the latter have steadily grown and found creative ways to challenge elite private programs. Today, a Washington Semester experience is within the means of nearly every undergraduate. Poor students no longer have to use the "back door." With some planning, a Washington Semester option exists and assures them a competitive foot in the "front door."
